This is the Judo blog of Lance Wicks. In this blog I cover mainly Judo and related topics. My Personal blog is over at where I cover more geeky topics. Please do leave comments on what you read or use the Contact Me form to send me an email with your thoughts and ideas.

Paying the bills

Exclamation mark Blog by Lance Wicks

Now this is how you sell Judo to a school...!

This video I found on the OKCDT website and I think is from Australia.

Please note the laughter, the clear message of what Judo involves. The "ooh"s and "ahh"s. The loud applause. Note also the use of male and female demonstrators and of people of different sizes.

Excellent job, lessons to be learnt by us all in this one!

BJA PR Role I applied for.

Regular readers will remember me saying that I put my name in the hat for the 6 month contract at the British Judo Association as a PR and Events assistant.

Firstly I'd like to thank those people who sent me some very kind words as a result of the post. Thank you!

Secondly, I can confirm that I will not be taking the role, because I did not get an interview.

I am of course a little hurt (my pride and ego has been bruised). But I am also disappointed from the perspective of someone who cares about Judo.

Without letting my head expand too greatly, I do think I know a thing or two about promoting Judo. If you are reading this post, you have proven my point. If you have visited planetJudo or listened to one of my podcasts then my point is proven too.

I have also held Publicity roles in Judo before and helped organise International Judo events, and of course just this year organised and promoted the NZ Team tour to the World Masters ( ).

So I am suprised by the letter I received saying they had received "strong candidates" and that they were not going to progress my application further. The candidates they have shortlisted presumably have more experience at promoting Judo and at events than I do.

This is terrific news and I await public announcement of who gets the role as they must be pretty darn awesome! They will obviously be doing some great things to promote the sport and the events the BJA is putting on.

Perhaps Mike Darter applied the swine! ;-)

If I were (even more) bitter and cynical I might read the (very much closed) forum of the BJA. And look at the discussion thread about the vacancy ( ... w=1#UNREAD )

But I am not at all annoyed... honest! ;-)

Finally themed my blog to match the rest of the site.

Hi all,
if you are a regular visitor to you might have noticed that I have finally "themed" the blog to match the rest of the site. Personally I think it looks much better.

There are a few gremlims to drive out, if you spot an error please do let me know so I can fix it. I have been rather naughty and done the theming on the live site, so if you visited last night you may have noticed it looking very weird as I switched!

I have also created two Judo shops. One for the USA and one for the UK. The shops are powered by Amazon, so you can trust them. The proceeds will help pay for the rising costs of keeping this and my other Judo websites (like and ) online.

I am trying to dedicate more time and energy to the blogs, you may have noticed? I am trying to make sure they all get looked at and entries added about twice a week minimum.

So far I am doing okay and might be dieing of shock as I have posted quite a few posts in the last 2-3 weeks! :-)

I hope you like the new layout, I shall be adding additional pages to the site too over the next few weeks and launching an entirely new site! So stay tuned.

Lastly, I have added a subcribe by email box to the right of the main text. If you pop your email address in there, then all the updates for this site will be sent to your inbox as they happen. (The same feature is available on if you want updates from 70+ Judo sites in your inbox).

Talk soon,

Densign White re-elected as a Sports Director of the European Judo Union.

The BJA website has just posted that (another) fellow student of mine, Densign White, has just been re-elected as a Sports Director of the European Judo Union.

Densign is one of three Sports Directors, Daniel Lascau (Bath Graduate) and Indrek Pertelson being the other two.

This is Densign's second term (4 years per term), so obviously the EJU feel he is doing a good job!

Well Done/Congratulations Densign!

Danny Murphy to become Hampshire Junior Squad Manager.

Today I am really pleased to be able to say that Danny Murphy has been appointed Hampshire Junior Squad Manager.

Danny I know via University of Bath, he is a colleague of mine on the BSc/Level 5 coaching course. I have also had the pleasure of having him mat side when I have fought. Danny is a World Masters silver medallist and a coach at the famous Budokwai Club in London.

Danny spent some time with me discussing his plans for the role before he interviewed for the role, and I think that the Hampshire Association has picked the right guy! He has the expertise and the mindset to develop players properly to progress into being Judo athletes when they get older.

So a virtual round of applause for Danny and to Hampshire, good things will follow!
