I work with computers, I am a I.T. geek. I presently work for a small specialist IT company in Basingstoke called Solution Centre where I do a great variety of technical IT "stuff". This page features some of the work I have done in IT, specifically some Open Source projects I try and support.

My IT Background:

I have been playing with computers since my parents bought a "Lambda", which was a ZX81 clone (yes there was a ZX81 clone). From there I went onto a "MicroBee" (CP/M based), C64 and then onto PCs. Lately I have moved into Linux and most recently onto a Mac also.

In about 1988, I dialled into my first BBS on a 300 baud acoustic coupler modem. Never looked back and have been online ever since!

As mentioned above, I presently and always have done a variety of things in IT. I have done websites (including where I work now), I have programmed in a variety of languages. Mainly web based stuff in Perl and PHP. Though I've dabbled elsewhere in everything from Forth to Basic, C++, VB, Python and others.

sReader

SPEED READER FOR SYMBIAN MOBILE PHONES (S80 - 9500)

This is a small project on Sourceforge that I started to develop a serial reader for the Symbian series 80 mobile phone. Specifically, sreader displays one word at a time in rapid succession to allow you to speed read text.

It is written in OPL on my Nokia 9500, the code is in "alpha" and is partially working. The display side works, however reading on text files has yet to be done. It is an open source project so anyone can contribute.

e-Judo

E-JUDO IS A WEB BASED SIMULATION OF JUDO WRITTEN IN PERL

e-Judo is a project that evolved from a web game I ran on this site in about 2000, the VWJL (Virtual World Judo League). Written in Perl, it is a project to develop a simulation of Judo . At this stage I have created the basic objects and a small amount of simulation, but it is VERY rough. At some stage I shall progress it. Again it is open source and hosted on Sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/e-judo

Nokia 9500 Communicator

Shareware/Freeware tips tricks etc for my mobile phone of choice.

Some time ago (say about 2004/2005) I realised I was entirely low tech in the PDA and mobile department. I don't know what happened to me, so I set out at one point to migrate onto a smart device. My device of choice was (and still is) the Nokia 9500 Communicator smart phone. I am dedicating an entire page to the various software I use, how I use the device, etc. Hopefully it will be of use to someone.

Perl

Although most of my programming lately has been PHP, I consider myself a Perl supporter. It is a flexible yet powerful language that has a huge support community on the web. The support alone makes it a good choice for a newbie or if you are deciding what language to program in. The number one place to hit for the perl community is perlmonks.org The monks there are terrifically knowledgable and willing to assist any one with a well thought out question to ask.

FMA

Floats Mobile Agent (FMA), is a application that links your phone to your computer and enables some neat features. I was involved when I had a compatible mobile phone, I am no longer active. I did however write the "Newbie Guide" documentation for the project. FMA is hosted over at Sourceforge.

Koga Screensaver

Back in the 90's I wrote a small Judo screensaver featuring Koga, nothing fancy but I liked it. It proved popular and I made it available on the web. It is still downloadable on Winsites. Koga Saver

NabazTag

NabazTag is a Wifi bunny. I have one called "Nifty", no really. It is a really interesting piece of hardware. You are able to set it up to read RSS reads, check emails etc. I recently hacked a script to read the weather from the BBC weather RSS feeds (see backstage.bbc.co.uk ). The script is available at http://wabbitvittles.com/applications/
